The DMK-led Secular Progressive Alliance will stage protests against the BJP-led Union government for rejecting Tamil Nadu’s request to increase the permissible moisture content for paddy procurement from 17% to 22%.

Protests will be held on November 23 in Thanjavur and on November 24 in Tiruvarur, said a joint statement from the DMK, Dravidar Kazhagam, Congress, MDMK, CPI(M), CPI, IUML, VCK, MNM, MMK, KMDK, and Tamilaga Valvurimai Katchi, issued on Friday (November 21, 2025).

The plea to procure paddy with higher moisture content due to heavy rains has not reached the ears of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the statement added.

Compensation has not been provided to farmers whose crops were affected, and the permissible level of moisture content has also not been increased. This is a betrayal of farmers in the delta region and puts their livelihood in question, the joint statement said.

The protesters will also urge the Union government to reconsider the request.
