A man under the influence of alcohol attacked a bus passenger with a billhook and stabbed another person at the District Headquarters Hospital in Erode on Monday (November 24, 2025).

According to the police, more than 20 passengers were travelling in TNSTC bus no. 38 from the Erode Bus Stand to Sivagiri Amman Kovil. When the bus stopped at the hospital bus stop, a man boarded the vehicle and picked a quarrel with fellow passengers. As the bus was nearing Moolapalayam, he suddenly took out a hidden billhook and attacked a passenger, causing head injury.

Shocked and angered, commuters overpowered the assailant, tied him up, and pushed him out of the bus. Erode Taluk police rushed to the spot after being alerted and took him into custody. The injured passenger is undergoing treatment. Police said the accused, identified as Boopathi, has several previous cases pending against him at the Erode Taluk police station.

Police said earlier in the day, Boopathi reportedly stabbed a construction worker, Perumal, from Salem district, who had come to District Headquarters Hospital for treatment, before boarding the bus. Perumal sustained injuries in two places and has been admitted to the hospital.
