An engineer working with the Town Panchayat office in Kariapatti, Virudhunagar district, was caught red-handed when he allegedly received a sum of ₹50,000 from a contractor as bribe towards settling a bill worth ₹1.38 crore on Thursday.

Following a complaint from Palanikumar, 42, of Sellur, Madurai, the DVAC (Directorate of Vigilance and Anti-Corruption) Virudhunagar district registered a case.

The complaint was that Palanikumar had bagged a contract to construct a modern crematorium at a cost of ₹1.38 crore in 2022. It was said that after he had completed the work, there was delay in settling the dues. After much persuasion, he received a payment of ₹1.14 crore.

When he repeatedly reminded about the balance payment, the engineer identified as Ganesan allegedly demanded ₹3.50 lakh as bribe for settlement of the bill. Hence, he approached the DVAC police.

After recording the statement, a team led by ADSP Ramachandran and Inspectors Boominathan and Jes Mumtaj were on surveillance at the office of Ganesan.

When the complainant handed over a sum of ₹50,000 with chemical coating, under the guise of paying the bribe amount in instalments, the DVAC team apprehended Ganesan red-handed. He was detained and taken to the DVAC office for further probe.
