A ration shop supervisor at Mookkaiyur who received bribe for ration card approval was arrested by Directorate of Vigilance and Anti-Corruption officials here on Thursday.

Police said the complainant from Sayalgudi area had wanted to get a ration card in his wife’s name. He had applied on online through an e-sevai centre around March 2025.

When he later inquired about the status of the ration card with the officers at Kadaladi taluk office, he was directed to meet the local ration shop under which his house fell.

About 10 days ago, when the complainant met the Mookkaiyur ration shop employee Muthulakshmi, 49, the latter had demanded ₹3,500 as a bribe for the ration card.

As he insisted on reducing the amount, she blatantly refused to hand over the money and get the ration card.

A few days ago, when he contacted the ration shop employee over the phone to explain his urgent need to get the card so as to avail treatment for his wife under the government insurance scheme, the supervisor still insisted him to pay ₹3,000.

Police added that the supervisor allegedly citing the need to share the bribe with her higher officials, refused to listen to the complainant.

Following this, the complainant registered a complaint with the DVAC officials and sought action against the ration shop worker.

Acting on the instructions of the DVAC police, the complainant gave the temporary employee ₹3,000 in chemically treated currency.

The police caught a helper red-handed while accepting the money. During investigation, it was confirmed that the helper was collecting the money on the instructions of supervisor Muthulakshmi. Consequently, the Anti-Corruption police arrested Muthulakshmi and are currently interrogating her.
