The East Corporation on Thursday announced a series of measures to strengthen animal husbandry, street dog management, and welfare infrastructure.
At a review meeting of the Animal Birth Control (ABC) and Anti-Rabies Vaccination (ARV) Monitoring Committee, Corporation Commissioner D.S. Ramesh issued directions to improve the implementation of programmes across the zone.
The Commissioner, to streamline dog population, set a target of 50 ABC surgeries per zone per day, adding up to 100 surgeries daily through two empanelled agencies. With current ABC and ARV tenders expiring in January, officials have been told to complete separate tender processes for both services by the end of the month. The corporation will prepare Mass Dog Vaccination (MDV) packages based on the 50 newly reorganised wards. Tenders will also be invited for the two remaining MDV packages, Mr. Ramesh said.
Citing the Supreme Court directions, Mr. Ramesh instructed officers to identify suitable land for new dog shelters to support the rehabilitation and long-term care of community dogs. If land is not available, the corporation will engage qualified agencies capable of providing comprehensive welfare and infrastructure services.
The officials were also asked to identify at least 100 feeding points for community dogs and install signboards at each location. A public notification on these points is expected to be issued soon.
Furthermore, the officials have been asked to procure combo vaccines offering protection against distemper, hepatitis, parvovirus, and parainfluenza in a single dose to improve canine immunisation coverage.
Land identified near Horamavu for a new ABC facility was also surveyed, and the Commissioner has ordered immediate fencing of the site to secure it for development.
Restore footpath slabs: North Commissioner
North Corporation Commissioner Pommala Sunil Kumar directed officials to immediately install missing or damaged slabs on footpaths and locations where underground drainage (UGD) work has been completed along Thanisandra Main Road. The instructions came during an inspection conducted from R.K. Hegde Nagar to Bellahalli Checkpoint.
He set a one-week deadline for restoring all slabs, warning that failure to comply would lead to recovery of contractors’ security deposits. He also cautioned that both current and former Executive Engineers would face action for lapses in supervision.
Comprehensive measures for Halasuru lake
Central Corporation Commissioner P. Rajendra Cholan has directed officials to undertake comprehensive measures for the development, conservation, and maintenance of Halasuru Lake. He stressed that the premises must be kept clean and that waste water must not be allowed to enter the waterbody under any circumstances.
Mr. Cholan instructed officials to immediately convene a meeting with the BWSSB and other departments to ensure that sewage inflow into the lake is fully prevented.
Vacant areas around the lake will be developed into parks, and additional saplings will be planted to improve the aesthetic appeal of the surroundings.
Mr. Cholan further directed that the adjoining storm-water drain be desilted regularly to maintain a smooth flow of rainwater and prevent blockage.
