An eight-year-old girl was run over by a garbage lorry belonging to the Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) on Friday afternoon.
The lorry reportedly brushed against the two-wheeler she was travelling on. In the impact, she fell on the road and came under its wheels.
The lorry driver, Saranraj, has been arrested.
According to the Traffic Investigation Wing police, Washermenpet, the victim was riding pillion on a two-wheeler driven by her teenaged cousin. When they were riding through Kailasam Street in Tondiarpet, the lorry brushed against them.
A police officer said the girl riding the two-wheeler seemed to have lost balance and the two fell off the vehicle. The pillion rider died on the spot, while the rider was injured. The police sent the body to the Government Stanley hospital for a post-mortem.
