The Waltair Division of East Coast Railway has set up an Emergency Medical Room (EMR) on Platform no.2 and 3 at Vizianagaram railway station in collaboration with Maharajahs Institute of Medical Sciences (MIMS Hospital), Nellimarla. The move is intended to provide round-the-clock emergency medical care to railway passengers.
Divisional Railway Manager Lalit Bohra commended the dedicated efforts of the Chief Medical Superintendent Dr D. Sharath Babu and the medical department in implementing this important emergency service. He expressed optimism that similar medical facilities will be extended to other important railway stations in the region.
The DRM said that passengers must present valid documents when requested by the concerned authorities to avail themselves of seamless medical services by the railways. The primary objective of the EMR is to offer immediate first aid and emergency assistance to passengers injured during train journeys due to accidents, falls, or other unforeseen incidents. The EMR will function 24 x 7 with qualified medical staff and is equipped with all necessary emergency care resources.
The EMR will give priority treatment to all injured passengers, with prompt transfer to nearby government or private hospitals as required, with preference given to government hospitals unless unavailable. The medical care is for bonafide passengers injured in railway accidents (as per the Indian Railways Act, amended from time to time). Medication and ambulance services will be provided by the EMR team free of cost.
For non-accident-related medical attention sought by passengers onboard trains, a nominal fee of ₹100 per patient will be charged through the Excess Fare Ticket (EFT), plus the actual cost of medicines dispensed. A small pharmacy will operate within the EMR, and private medical consultations for other passengers will be provided at rates as per the norms and terms of Central Government Health Scheme (CGHS) rates.
Passengers are advised to make use of this facility aimed at enhancing safety and care during their train journeys.
