Dramatic scenes were witnessed on Thursday evening here after the police received a false alert that Rahul Mamkootathil, MLA, might surrender before the Hosdurg court, prompting heavy deployment of personnel on the premises.
Police presence was intensified as speculation grew over whether Mr. Mamkootathil would surrender or be arrested, just hours after the Thiruvananthapuram Principal Sessions Court had denied him anticipatory bail in a rape and coerced termination of pregnancy case. Court officials in Hosdurg, including judges and senior staff, remained inside the court well past the closing time, further heightening anticipation.
Political activists from rival fronts, including the Democratic Youth Federation of India and the Bharatiya Janata Party, gathered outside the court to stage protest, leading to a tense atmosphere.
However, District Police Chief Vijay Bharat Reddy later clarified that the alert received was false and that police force had been withdrawn from the court premises.
