A 65-year-old farmer from Athikulam village near Kayathar died in the late hours of Friday, after accidentally stepping on an electric fence that he had illegally erected to protect his farmland from wild boar.
Police said S. Vadivel of Athikulam village, had taken two acres of private land for lease at South Ilandhaikulam and cultivated maize on it. To protect the crop from wild boar, he had installed an electric fence around the field using metal wires.
On Friday night, he went to his field and did not return home for a long time. His wife went to check on him and she found him dead after being electrocuted by the electric fence. On receiving information, police rushed to the spot and recovered his body and sent it for post mortem examination at the government hospital in Kovilpatti.
Kayathar police registered a case and began an investigation.
