P. R. Pandian, president, Coordination Committee of All Farmers Associations of Tamil Nadu, has been sentenced to 13 years imprisonment and fined ₹13,000 by a Fast Track Court in a case relating to damage of ONGC properties during a protest in 2015.
The verdict was delivered by Sessions Judge G. Sarathraj, B.L. The case was registered based on a complaint filed by the Vikkirapandiyam Police Station.
According to the prosecution, Pandian, former panchayat leader Selvaraj, and 22 others were part of a protest held in Kariyamangalam village in 2015, opposing the establishment of an ONGC well in the area. During the demonstration, ONGC properties were allegedly damaged, leading to the filing of charges against the group.
The court sentenced Selvaraj to 13 years and an additional three months of imprisonment, while the remaining 22 accused were acquitted due to lack of evidence.
Police sources said Pandian will be lodged in the Tiruchi Central Prison to undergo his sentence.
