With the heavy rainfall over the past few days leaving paddy crops inundated in several parts of the delta, the Tamizhaga Cauvery Vivasayigal Sangam on Tuesday urged the government to sanction a compensation of ₹35,000 per acre to the affected farmers.

Speaking to the media at Thirukkalar in Kottur block, Tiruvarur district, association general secretary P. R. Pandian claimed that samba and thaladi crops raised by the farmers in around 5 lakh acres in the delta districts were affected by the recent rain.

The fields still remained under a sheet of water and the situation might get worse in Thanjavur, Nagapattinam, Tiruvarur and Mayiladuthurai districts in view of the Meteorological Department’s prediction of more rain in next few days.

Stating that the wild growth in inlet and outlet irrigation channels in several parts of the delta region, particularly in Kottur block, he feared that the transplanted samba and thaladi crops would perish if the situation continued to remain the same.

Hence, in addition to exhorting the Tamil Nadu government to clear the waterways of wild growth, he demanded ₹35,000 per acre as compensation to the farmers and urged the government to release the amount from the Disaster Relief Fund.
