Farmers in Tiruppur district who have suffered economic setback due to the deaths of livestock caused by wandering dogs have urged the Animal Husbandry Department to settle the pending compensation.

Months after livestock farmers in Tiruppur, who were the most affected, spearheaded protests last year, the State government issued an order notifying compensation for the animals killed by the dogs — ₹6,000 per goat, ₹ 37,500 for cattle head, and ₹200 per bird. A sum of ₹61.8 lakh was released by the government to compensate farmers for loss of seven calves (₹ 2,62,500), 981 sheep and goat (₹ 58,86,000), and 161 birds (₹ 32,200) from September 21, 2024 to March 21, 2025.

However, losses before and after this specified duration has not been addressed. In Tiruppur district, farmers in Kangayam, Dharapuram, Madathukulam, Udumalpet, Palladam, Avinashi and Uthukuli blocks have been complaining of dog attacks on a periodic basis.

On September 19, the district administration wrote to the Director of Animal Husbandry and Medical Services, seeking compensation for the cattle and poultry lost to dogs from January 1, 2024 to October 23, 2024, and from March 21, 2025 to September 19, 2025.

In Tiruppur district, the deaths of 632 sheep, 194 goat, 15 calves and 566 birds were accounted for during the period, and the pending compensation amount was arrived at ₹ 54.93 lakh.

In a letter to the Animal Husbandry Department Secretary, the district Collector had sought an additional ₹ 10 lakh, citing recurring attacks on the cattle and poultry by the dogs.

The main demands of the farmers constitute calculation of compensation based on market rates, and a government order to the effect that the compensation will be paid immediately.
