Farmers seek immediate sanction of relief for kuruvai crop damages

Members of Tamizhaga Cauvery Vivasayigal Sangam staged a protest at Thirumarugal in Nagapattinam district on Tuesday demanding immediate sanction of compensation to farmers for the kuruvai paddy crop damaged due to rain in October.

P. R. Pandian, association general secretary, who led the demonstration in front of the office of the Assistant Director of Agriculture in Thirumarugal, claimed that paddy crop, which were ready for harvest, were damaged on about 10,000 acres in Nagapattinam district. The Department of Agriculture should conduct a proper survey of the damage and release the list of affected farmers village wise. The affected farmers should be provided a compensation of ₹35,000 an acre from the Disaster Response Fund immediately. Steps should be taken to sanction compensation for farmers, who had insured the crop, he demanded.

Mr. Pandian also alleged that there was a shortage of fertilizers and urged the government to take steps to ensure adequate availability of fertilizers in the district.

Earlier, the farmers marched from the bus stand to the Agriculture Department office.
