A section of farmers on Thursday staged a walkout from the monthly agriculture grievance redress meeting demanding higher compensation to families of four women killed by lightning while at work in Cuddalore district recently.

The farmers, including N.V. Kannan, Thanajvur district secretary, Tamil Nadu Vivasayigal Sangam, affiliated with CPI(M), and Tamil Nadu Cauvery Farmers Protection Association Secretary Sundara Vimalanathan, walked out of the hall where Collector B. Priyanka Pankajam chaired the monthly agriculture grievance redress meeting on October 30.

They raised slogans in support of their demands before leaving the meeting hall and staging a demonstration in the portico in the Collectorate complex.

Pointing to the amount of compensation paid to families of persons who lost their lives at the Karur stampede and the Kallakurichi illicit liquor tragedy, the demonstrators said extending ₹5 lakh each to families of four women who died in harness was inadequate. They wanted the compensation amount to be increased to ₹25 lakh.

They exhorted the State government to compensate the crop loss suffered by farmers in recent rain and wanted the kuruvai paddy brought to the direct purchase centres be procured without any conditions.
