A female Indian Gaur (Bos gaurus), commonly known as the Indian bison, died on Friday during an animal exchange operation between Bannerghatta Biological Park (BBP), Bengaluru, and Nehru Zoological Park (NZP), Hyderabad.
The exchange was part of an officially approved inter-zoo programme aimed at enhancing genetic diversity and strengthening conservation breeding initiatives.
According to a statement issued by the Executive Director of BBP, the capture and relocation operation was carried out under the close supervision of veterinary and forest officials, adhering strictly to all prescribed animal welfare protocols and guidelines.
The incident occurred at around 11 a.m., while the gaur was being transported to the quarantine enclosure following its capture. Despite the presence of a full veterinary support team and the implementation of all necessary safety and welfare measures, the animal showed signs of distress.
Immediate medical intervention was provided by the veterinary staff in an effort to stabilise the animal, but it could not be revived and succumbed during the process.
The BBP authorities expressed their regret over the incident, emphasising that every possible step had been taken to ensure the safety and well-being of the animal throughout the operation.
A detailed post-mortem (necropsy) examination was being carried out by qualified veterinary experts to determine the exact cause of death.
