The State Finance Department has given its consent to construct a 300-bed hospital in Puttur through the Department of Medical Education to pave the way for opening a government medical college as announced by Chief Minister Siddaramaiah in the 2025-26 State Budget, according to MLA for Puttur Ashok Kumar Rai.

Addressing presspersons in Puttur on Monday, the MLA said that the consent was given on November 27.

He said that establishing the medical college might require ₹1,000 crore. It has been proposed to build the college on 40 acres of land at Bannur, near Puttur city.

The MLA said that a detailed project report (DPR) of the proposed college will be prepared in the next one-and-a-half months and bids will be invited within the subsequent two months for constructing the hospital building.

“Later, Mr. Siddaramaiah will lay the foundation stone for the project,” Mr. Rai said showing the order of the Finance Department.

The MLA said that the Finance Department has also asked for the transfer of the file, related to building the medical college, from the Department of Health and Family Welfare to the Medical Education Department.

When the college and the hospital are built through the Medical Education Department it will help in the smooth flow of approvals required and make the project a reality, Mr. Rai said, adding that the college will be a gift from the Congress government to Puttur.

It may be mentioned here that Mr. Siddaramaiah during his visit to Puttur on October 20 went on record that the government medical college in Puttur will become a reality at any cost.

Addressing a gathering at the ‘Ashoka Jana Mana – 2025’ programme organised by Rai Estate Educational and Charitable Trust at Puttur, the Chief Minister said that the Opposition leaders have expressed doubts over the government’s commitment to establish the college. “A government hospital and the government medical college will be opened in Puttur as announced. There need not be any doubt over the same because we (the Congress government) have delivered what we promised,” the Chief Minister said.
