Fire accident in packaging unit in Virudhunagar district

A freak incident in a paper packaging unit in Virudhunagar district resulted in a fire accident on Tuesday.

Police said that Ramesh owned a paper packaging unit in Muniasamy Nagar in Thiruthangal. It is said that the workers usually light a lamp before starting work.

When a worker had lit the lamp, it had reportedly fallen on the floor resulting in catching fire to the products on the floor. Apprehending trouble, they had ran away to safety.

Fire and Rescue service personnel put out the fire. Thiruthangal police are investigating.

One died as van topples

In another incident, a young man identified as Vikki of Mamsapuram died on the spot, when the van carrying workers to a nearby fireworks unit toppled. Police said that about 5 to 10 workers, including women from Pudu Chennakulam near Srivilliputtur were travelling in a van to the fireworks unit in Narikudi.

As the vehicle approached Ramalingapuram-Kodangipatti stretch, it suddenly ran inside the nearby tank causing injuries to the occupants. In the impact, Vikki died. Six women workers were rushed to Srivilliputtur Government Hospital in 108 ambulances for treatment. Vanniampatti police are investigating.
