Most of the 48 Bachelor of Fisheries Sciences students (BFSc) of the College of Fisheries’s 1975 batch spent their time on the campus in Mangaluru on Thursday. This heterogeneous group of alumni, most of them who were in their 70s, thanked their teachers for making them put in hard yards, which shaped their careers in Fisheries and other sectors. The elderly professors thanked their wards and modestly said they did their duty.

The 1975 batch BFSc students celebrated their golden jubilee of the alumni at the college’s seminar hall. They had the similar function organised on November 18 and 19 at the University of Agriculture Sciences, Bengaluru, as they had their first three semesters of the course in Bengaluru.

N. Ramiah, Retired Chief Scientist in National Institute of Oceonography, said he and his 47 classmates happily slogged and got through turbulent academic tests. The training by experienced teachers helped them make a mark in diverse careers, he said.

Subramanian Govindaraju, a Malaysian citizen, who was among the six foreign students in the batch, flew down to Mangaluru to take part in the event. “Whatever I have achieved in my career in fish hatchery in Malaysia is all because of this institute,” he recalled

Shivanand Murthy, former Registrar of University of Horticulture Sciences Bagalkot, who served for 38 years in the College’s Aqua Culture Department, said their batch was the biggest batch of the institution. H. Naganath, who worked as officer in UCO and four other nationalised banks, recalled the tireless efforts of the then Dean of the College, H.P.C. Shetty and professors in moulding careers of students.

Former Director General of Police H.N. Sathyanarayana Rao told professor (retired) Keshavanath, who taught Fish Genetics, that he was among the four students whose assessment marks were cut by the latter as they went to a pilgrimage centre during a North India Study tour.

Former Joint Directors of Fisheries, G.B. Madikeri and C.K. Murthy, fish health scientist C.V. Mohan, retired Corporation Bank Mangaluru’s Ashok Nagar Branch Manager Subrahmanya Bhat, and former Karnataka Fisheries Development Corporation’s General Manager M.D. Prasad also shared their experiences of college life.

The group then felicitated their professors Sheshappa, who taught Fish Engineering; Mr. Keshavanath; Hariharan, who taught Oceanography; and former College Dean Ramachandra Bhat

A coffee table book containing photographs and articles of batchmates and retired professors was also released.

Dean, College of Fisheries, H.N. Anjanayappa, attended the function.
