Yaduveer Krishnadatta Chamaraja Wadiyar, Mysuru MP, on Sunday (November 23) said that the Fit India Movement, launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi with the vision of ensuring good health for every citizen, is being given major importance in Mysuru. Various sporting events are being organised in the city under this initiative, he added.
He was speaking after launching the Kids’ Cyclothon, organised as part of the MP’s Sports Festival at the Manasagangothri campus of the University of Mysore. The event was jointly conducted by the university’s Department of Physical Education, Mysuru District Amateur Cycling Association, Phonics International Academy, Cyclopedia, and others.
“Fit India is one of the flagship movements of the Union government. As envisioned by the Prime Minister, we are organising various sports festivals across the Mysuru and Kodagu Parliamentary Constituency to encourage sporting activities right from a young age,” Mr. Wadiyar said.
The MP said creating awareness on health is the primary objective. “If children are encouraged to prioritise sports from an early age, our country’s flag will shine at the global level in the future. There are immense opportunities in cycling competitions, and I am committed to providing a platform for budding talent,” he added.
Mr. Wadiyar also said that a tug-of-war competition will soon be held as part of the MP’s Sports Festival. “Mysuru has been famous for wrestling since the era of the Maharajas. Therefore, a wrestling tournament will also be organised,” he stated.
He added that in Kodagu, preparations are under way to organise hockey and volleyball tournaments as well.
The Cyclothon featured four categories — boys and girls below six years, below eight years, below 10 years and below 12 years. Over 150 children participated.
Mementos and certificates were presented to the top three winners in each category, while participation certificates were given to all children who took part.
Mysuru District Amateur Cycling Association secretary N. Lokesh, district cycling coach Faryal Jamedar, honorary president Ramesh Narasaiah, and others were present.
