A fire broke out at the Allikulam court complex in Periamet early Wednesday morning. Several bookstores at the complex were gutted in the fire.

The city police said flames were seen on the ground floor of the Allikulam court complex by security personnel. The complex has several shops – including bookstores, pet shops, and restaurants – on the ground floor. The control room of the city police was immediately alerted.

The Periamet police, along with fire and rescue services personnel, put out the fire, which was caused by an electrical leakage, after more than an hour of firefighting operations. In the fire, five bookstores containing hundreds of books were completely destroyed.

The police are investigating the case.
