The Udupi district police have arrested five persons on the charge of producing fake gold ornaments and availing themselves of a gold loan from Karnataka Bank.
Based on a complaint by the manager of Karnataka Bank’s Kattingeri branch, the Udupi’s Shirva police on October 30 registered four separate cases of cheating. Three special teams headed by Kaup inspector Ajmat Ali were formed to trace the accused from Bengaluru, Goa, Mumbai, and New Delhi.
The police gave the names of the accused as Puneet Anand Kotian, Sudeep, Ranjan Kumar, H.K. Sarvajeet, and Rajesh Dileep Patil. The police seized ₹4.3 lakh and a laser device used to put fake hallmark on the ornaments, and a computer.
The police said the accused were also involved in similar cheating cases registered in Udupi Town, Brahmavar, and Hiriyadka police stations.
The accused were produced before the jurisdictional magistrate, who remanded them in judicial custody, the police said.
