Five individuals, including a juvenile, were arrested by the Nalgonda police for peddling ganja near in Nalgonda on Tuesday. The officials seized 1.5 kilograms of the contraband worth about ₹37,500, three mobile phones and two motorbikes from their possession.
The arrested were identified as Somu Sai Teja, 21; Aylapaka Prabhu alias Santosh, 19; Pagidimarri Mahesh, 19 and Naragoni Venu, 20, all residents of Shaligowraram mandal in Nalgonda district. Police said the group developed the habit of consuming ganja while working in Hyderabad and later decided to make quick money by selling it.
Investigation revealed that Sai Teja and Prabhu travelled to Koramanur on the Andhra-Odisha border about 10 days ago on a bike and bought 2.5 kilograms of marijuana at ₹3,000 per kilogram. They brought the substance to Vangamarthi and stored it at Sai Teja’s house, where they later consumed part of it and divided the rest equally among themselves. Each reportedly took about 300 grams.
Acting on a tip-off, the police intercepted seven individuals travelling on three bikes from Vangamarthi towards Suryapet. They managed to arrest four accused and a juvenile, while two others, identified as Naragoni Venu’s associate Venkanna and Sripathi Uday’s father Venkateswarlu, escaped with a share of the contraband.
A case has been booked and efforts are under way to trace the accused.
