Five persons were killed and seven injured when a mini goods vehicle turned turtle after hitting the road median on Kochi-Panvel NH 66 at Uliyaragoli in Kaup police station limits, Udupi district, on Sunday, November 30

The incident occurred when the driver of the goods vehicle, transporting decoration material along with labourers, lost control over the vehicle. The vehicle climbed upon the divider and overturned on the other side. The police gave the names of the deceased as Pappu Ravidas, 28, and Harish, 27, from Assam; Gapunath, 50, from Tripura, and Kamal and Samaresh from West Bengal.

The injured have been identified as vehicle driver Ranjith Amin, 33, from Kothalkatte, workers Ganesh Bahadur Roy, 36, Prabhas Roy, 26, Gopal Bhaumik, 16, Suraj Dolai, 16, and Subratho, 20. They are undergoing treatment at a private hospital in Udupi.

Kaup MLA Gurme Suresh Shetty, former MLAs Vinay Kumar Sorake and Lalaji R. Mendon visited the accident spot and later the hospital.
