Five organs were harvested from a 43-year-old woman who was declared brain dead on Tuesday, after her family consented to the donation through the government’s Jeevandan programme. The donation has given a renewed chance at survival to multiple patients awaiting transplants. The retrieved organs include her kidneys, liver, heart and a lung.
The donor, Kallepalli Upendra, was a resident of Yadgirigutta in Nalgonda district and a homemaker. On November 16, she was returning home with her husband on a two-wheeler when they were struck by a car, causing both to fall and sustain injuries. They were rushed to a private hospital in Hyderabad for treatment.
Despite continuous medical care, doctors declared her brain dead. A coordinator from the Jeevandan organ donation programme then met the family, offered grief counselling and explained the significance of organ donation. Following the discussions, the family agreed to proceed with the donation.
