A five-year-old boy died after a piece of banana got stuck in his windpipe, at Annai Sathya Nagar in Erode on Wednesday (December 3, 2025).

The deceased, Saaisaran, was the son of Manickam and Muthulakshmi, a daily-wage couple residing in the area.

On Wednesday, the parents had left for work after leaving Saaisaran in the care of his grandmother. While playing at home, the child reportedly peeled a banana kept in the house and began eating it. A piece of the fruit accidentally entered his windpipe instead of the food pipe, causing him to choke.

The grandmother and the neighbours rushed to his aid and took him to the District Headquarters Hospital. However, doctors declared that the child had died on the way due to suffocation. The body has been kept at the hospital for post-mortem examination. Karungalpalayam police are investigating the incident.
