The six-member committee constituted to probe the alleged food poisoning at SRM University in Amaravati, collected water and food samples from the institute.

A few days ago, the students complained of stomach ache and vomiting and took treatment at the college dispensary, while a couple of hostel inmates were admitted to a private hospital. Later, the hostel inmates reportedly staged a protest in front of the university alleging that the food being served was of poor quality. They also showed photos of insects in the food. The students underwent treatment for five days since November 01, 2025, but the incident came to light only after they staged a dharna in front of the college after a few days.

Following complaints of food poisoning in SRM University, Guntur District Collector A. Thameem Ansariya ordered an inquiry. She constituted a committee headed by Tenali Sub-Collector V. Sanjana Simha and five others who visited the campus. According to the medical records, about 300 students complained of giddiness, stomach pain and vomiting in the last few days. In all, 6,000 students were taking food in the hostel, Ms. Sanjana told the media.

“We are inquiring on the water sources to the university, hygiene in kitchen and canteen, the raw material being used for preparing food and recorded the statements of the students,” the Sub-Collector said.

“Water and food raw material samples have been collected and sent to the State Food Laboratory, located at Nacharam in Telangana. A detailed inquiry into the food poisoning incident is on,” she said.

Speaking to The Hindu on Sunday (November 09, 2025), Guntur District Superintendent of Police Vakul Jindal said that the police officers visited SRM University after the incident and students’ protest. The situation is under control on the campus, the SP said.

Meanwhile, the university management has declared holidays and sent the students to their homes.
