The Tamil Nadu Medical Students Association-Foreign Medical Graduates wing (TNMSA-FMG) has decided to hold a hunger protest in Chennai in the first week of January, condemning the Tamil Nadu Medical Council (TNMC) for delaying the issuance of temporary registration certificates to FMGs.
In a press release issued on Friday, the association, after holding a meeting with State-level office bearers, said the TNMC must stop delaying the issuance of the temporary registration certificates for FMGs.
Instead of the mandatory one-year Compulsory Rotating Medical Internship (CRMI) training, the TNMC was allotting many FMGs to two or three years of CRMI, and this should be stopped. The present allocation of 7.5% of the total CRMI seats in medical colleges for FMGs should be increased to 20%, and FMGs should be permitted to undergo CRMI training in district hospitals as well. The association demanded provision of hostel facilities for FMGs working as medical interns.
They have decided to go on a hunger protest to put forward these demands, the release said. G. R. Ravindranath, State general secretary of Doctors’ Association for Social Equality (DASE), said that many students were affected due to the TNMC’s delays, in some cases waiting as long as six months for their certificates.
Among others, A.R. Shanthi, DASE secretary, and representatives of TNMSA-FMG wing, including its president N. M. Saran and general secretary S. Vasanth Philips Abhishek, were present at the meeting.
