In an effort to improve logical reasoning in children, former Madras University syndicate member V. Joseph launched aptitude skills books recently.

Professor Joseph said, “Logical reasoning and analytical skills questions are asked in every competitive exam from entrance exams to government jobs, these questions are asked to ensure the problem-solving skills of candidates.”

Published by Global Publishing House, the books are for Classes 1-8. It introduces students to simple analogy in Class 1 with pictures and icons. The students can take up the self assessments in the books to test their knowledge. As they progress through the classes, the children practice more complex questions from word problems, series decoding, matrix and puzzle tests among others. Over a year in the making, the professor and his team worked on the aptitude books with teachers from across the State.

Pointing out that schools now focus on rote memorisation and that analytical skills take a backseat, he said: “When the students enter colleges and companies pose such questions during placement exams, they get a crash course on logical reasoning. Many only then start studying it. These books will prepare children from their young ages,” he said.

Presently, as many as 36 schools in the city have taken up these books. “The teachers undergo training to teach these books to the students,” he added.

Noting that marks are important in a student’s life, the professor also stated that these skills improve the thinking skills of an individual and hence, increases problem solving aspects of the person.
