Former Minister and Kinathukadavu MLA (AIADMK) S. Dhamodharan submitted a petition to the Coimbatore District Collector on Saturday (December 6, 2025) regarding the proposed dog shelters at the Vellalore dumpyard premises.

In his petition, Mr. Dhamodharan highlighted that residents up to 10 km from the dumpyard are affected by the foul odour emanating from the site. Legacy waste at the dumpyard has caused groundwater in nearby open and borewells within a two km radius to turn yellow, rendering it unfit for use.

The former Minister expressed concern that building dog shelters and expanding the existing Animal Birth Control Centre at the dumpyard would further disturb the local population due to noise from the animals and potential hygiene issues.

He also cited a 2018 ruling by the National Green Tribunal, which prohibited dumping new waste at the site and ordered the removal of existing waste using bio-mining methods. The ruling also banned any new construction in the area.

In light of this, the petition urged the Collector to take necessary action to withdraw the proposal and prevent further hardship for the local community.
