Four persons were sentenced to life in prison for murdering an autorickshaw driver in the district.
The deceased was Sasikumar (38), a resident of Chinnanur near Veeranam.
According to the police, on November 15, 2017, while Sasikumar and his relative were headed to Chinnanur, a four-member gang in an inebriated state stopped the auto at Periya Veeranam and asked to drop them at a particular location. But Sasikumar claimed that he was going to his house for personal work and did not allow them get into the auto, which created a quarrel. During the verbal duel, the gang attacked him with a wooden log. Sasikumar sustained grievous injuries and died on the next day at the hospital.
The Veeranam police registered a case and arrested Stephen Kumar (36), Selvaganapathi (27), Mohankumar (35), and Manivannan (35), residents of Periya Veeranam. The trial of the case was held at the Salem District Second Additional Sessions Court, and on Monday (November 24, 2025) the court found the arrested persons guilty and sentenced them to life in prison and also levied ₹50,000 per person as fine.
