Four women who went for a bath at a beach in Mettukuppam near Ennore drowned on Friday after being swept away by strong waves. Later, their bodies washed ashore at the same place.
The victims have been identified as Devaki Selvam, 28; Bhavani, 19; Shalini, 17; and Gayathri, 18 — one of them was from the rehabilitation camp for Sri Lankan Tamil refugees at Elavur near Gummidipoondi. The others were from the nearby area. Shalini was a college student and the other three were working at a textile shop.
Police sources said they had visited a secluded place on the beach, and when Shalini stepped into the water, she was pulled in by a strong wave. The other three were swept away when they stepped in to rescue her.
“As it was a secluded place, no one was there in the vicinity to rescue them,” a police officer said. Sometime later, the bodies were washed ashore. The police sent them for a post-mortem.
