The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) on Tuesday served an improvement notice on a private caterer working for the Government College of Technology (GCT), Coimbatore, after finding various flaws in the functioning of the kitchen of women’s hostel on the campus.
The FSSAI Designated Officer, T. Anuradha, inspected the kitchen on Tuesday, based on a report that the facility was being run in unhygienic conditions.
Though the caterer had obtained a licence from FSSAI, the cooking section did not have proper lighting. The caterer also lacked proper records for periodical medical examination of food handlers and pest control measures being taken.
“An improvement notice has been served on the caterer. Fifteen days have been given for the caterer to correct flaws found during the inspection,” Dr. Anuradha said.
Following the inspection, the FSSAI DO and the Regional Joint Director of Collegiate Education N. Shenbagalakshmi held an online meeting with more than 50 arts and science colleges in Coimbatore. Principals and hostel wardens, who participated in the meeting, were instructed to ensure that food served to hostel inmates are prepared in hygienic circumstances with quality raw materials.
