The Purple Building Certification Scheme (PBCS) was launched by Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari at an event in New Delhi on December 4, to mark the International Day of Persons with Disabilities (PwDs) celebrated on December 3.
The PBCS has been developed by Andhra Pradesh MedTech Zone (AMTZ), with inputs from the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) and the Inclusive Divyangjan Entrepreneur Association (IDEA) and ensures equitable access for people with diverse mobility and sensory needs .
Mr. Gadkari has asked the NITI Aayog to draft a proposal and the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment to prepare a Bill to be cleared in Parliament to make uniform accessibility a legal right. “India needs to be at par with European and the US standards AMTZ has done a good job,” Mr. Gadkari said.
Jitendra Sharma, MD and Founder-CEO of AMTZ, said, “Accessibility should not be seen as an exception but as the foundation of every building in a truly inclusive nation. Three expert committees, with support from ICMR, have worked meticulously to construct a national standard for accessibility. Today, we present a framework that builders and real estate developers across India can adopt to bridge the gap between policy and real-world implementation.”
