Gandharvakkottai MLA and president of Tamil Nadu Agricultural workers Union affiliated to AIKS, M. Chinnadurai has urged the State government to provide immediate relief and compensation to families affected by the heavy rainfall in the district.
With the northeast monsoon intensifying over the district, Karambakudi and surrounding areas have borne the brunt of the impact. On Monday, the MLA visited rain-hit villages, including Sengamedu, Odappaviduthi, Manamadai, Pappapatti, Kallumadai, Pudukottaividuthi, Kadampatti and Keerathur, to assess the situation.
Mr. Chinnadurai said heavy rain in Karambakudi region had caused all local tanks to overflow. “Maharaja Samuthiram and Uzhavayal canals are flowing to the brim. Water has entered several houses, some of which have collapsed or suffered severe partial damage.”
Mr. Chinnadurai appealed to the Tamil Nadu government and district administration to step in immediately. “Damaged houses and affected crops must be enumerated without delay, and compensation should be provided on a war-footing,” he said.
Karambakudi Tahsildar Jamuna, Block Development Officer Sandhil Kumar, revenue and agriculture officials, DMK union secretary V. Muthukrishnan, CPI(M) district committee member T. Anbalagan, and union secretary Durai Aribaskar accompanied the MLA during the visit.
