In an attempt to address the issue of disposing unclaimed bodies, the Government Medical College in Kottayam is set to establish a state-of-the-art gas crematorium within its compound.

According to authorities, the project, funded with ₹1.5 crore from the Constituency Asset Development Fund of Minister for Devaswom and Cooperatives V. N. Vasavan, aims to enhance the college’s infrastructure. The gas crematorium is being built on a 50-cent plot of land on the Medical College campus.

“The construction will be done with advanced facilities designed to minimise the environmental pollution and to cremate dead bodies quickly with an odour-free cremation process. Since it is operated using LPG, there will be no environmental pollution. Scientific pollution control systems are being prepared for this,” said an official

The facility will include essential amenities such as security, office space, generator rooms, parking, a garden, lighting, restrooms, and drainage systems.

The crematorium will be useful for handling unclaimed bodies arriving at the Medical College hospital. The Arpookara grama panchayat, where the Medical College is located, does not have a public crematorium. The people here were dependent on crematoriums in other places. The crematorium coming to the Medical College will also be useful for other grama panchayats in the Ettumanoor constituency.

The construction is being undertaken by Uralungal Labour Contract Cooperative Society (ULCC).
