The Chennai Corporation has planned to construct 26 stainless steel bus shelters at an estimated cost of ₹3.73 crore under the Member of Legislative Assembly Local Area Development Scheme.

The shelters are proposed at locations such as Velachery, Surapet, Madhavaram, Manali, Kotturpuram, MGR Nagar, Mandaveli and Besant Nagar.

Raji, a college student who regularly commutes by bus, said as there was no shelter near the Guindy Railway Station, they were forced to endure the scorching sun and the rain while waiting for buses. A bus shelter has now been planned on Sardar Patel Road towards Guindy, near K.B. Nagar second main road, for ₹11.8 lakh.

Shelters coming up on Velachery Bypass, Sardar Patel Road, and in Shastri Nagar are estimated to cost ₹11.8 lakh each. Those planned at Surapet, Manali, and Madhavaram will cost ₹15.68 lakh each, while the one on Kotturpuram Gandhimandapam Road, opposite the Anna Centenary Library, will cost ₹22.58 lakh.

Two shelters are to come up on Loop Road in Mylapore. “Permanent structures were not permitted at the location earlier, but following requests from residents about six months ago, the proposal was taken up for special consideration and approval. The process has since been completed, and funds allotted. The shelters are expected to be ready by December,” Dha.Velu, Mylapore MLA, said.

Madhavaram MLA S. Sudharsanam said locations near institutions and remote spots such as Surapet, Madhavaram Bus Terminal and near Puzhal Camp are being given priority.
