The Family Adoption Programme (FAP) for the newly admitted MBBS 2025 batch was formally inaugurated at the GITAM Institute of Medical Sciences and Research (GIMSR) on Thursday.
Pro Vice-Chancellor Dr. B. Geetanjali said that the programme will offer students valuable learning experience by enabling them to directly engage with communities.
As per the National Medical Commission (NMC) guidelines, GIMSR has assigned 450 families in the Rushikonda area to the students, with each student being responsible for three families. Over a span of three years, students will make periodic visits to their allotted households, allowing them to understand the real-world influence of social and environmental factors on health.
As part of their field activities, students will interact with the family members to collect baseline demographic information and assess environmental health conditions, dietary patterns, and other social determinants of health. They will also carry out basic medical assessments, including blood pressure measurements, nutritional screening, and general clinical examinations under the guidance and support of faculty members.
GIMSR Community Medicine Professor Dr. B. Sreevidya said that the primary objective of the Family Adoption Program is to help future medical professionals understand the intricate relationship between community factors and individual health.
