The Hollywood Foreign Press Association announced the 2026 Golden Globe nominations on Monday, outlining the early shape of this year’s awards season and positioning several key contenders ahead of the Oscars. One Battle After Another topped all film nominees with nine mentions, establishing Paul Thomas Anderson’s political satire as a major presence despite its uneven box-office run. The film appears in Best Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy and earned nominations for Anderson’s direction and screenplay, Jonny Greenwood’s score and five individual acting categories — Leonardo DiCaprio, Chase Infiniti, Benicio Del Toro, Sean Penn and Teyana Taylor. Its broad recognition places the Warner Bros title at the center of the Best Picture and Director conversation after a strong run at early critics’ awards.

In the drama field, Neon’s Sentimental Value and Warner Bros.’ Sinners followed closely with eight and seven nominations. They join Netflix’s Frankenstein, Focus Features’ Hamnet, Cannes Palme d’Or winner It Was Just an Accident and Brazil’s The Secret Agent in a category that skews heavily toward international and more formally ambitious work. The lineup signals a competitive Best Picture race at the Oscars, with most of these titles appearing consistently across critics’ groups and year-end lists.

Netflix led all distributors with 35 nominations across film and television, followed by Warner Bros and HBO with 31 — a significant distribution breakdown in light of Netflix’s recent acquisition of those assets. The streamer also placed multiple titles across technical categories, suggesting a strong showing in craft races as awards season advances.

On the television side, The White Lotus earned six nominations, reflecting continued voter support for the anthology series, while Netflix’s Adolescence followed with five. Only Murders in the Building, Severance, The Bear and Nobody Wants This also performed strongly, offering a preview of likely Emmy contenders later in the year. The nominations mark another season dominated by streaming platforms, with only a handful of broadcast series appearing in major categories.

Acting fields across film indicate a familiar mix of established names and newer entrants. Jessie Buckley (Hamnet) and Renate Reinsve (Sentimental Value) appear well-positioned in Best Actress – Drama, while Michael B. Jordan (Sinners) and Oscar Isaac (Frankenstein) strengthen their standing in Best Actor – Drama. In the musical or comedy categories, Cynthia Erivo (Wicked: For Good), Emma Stone (Bugonia) and Chase Infiniti (One Battle After Another) continue trajectories that could carry into the Academy’s final voting round.

The Golden Globes also expanded the ceremony with categories for podcasting and cinematic/box office achievement. That latter field includes F1, Sinners, Wicked: For Good and Zootopia 2, indicating a broader attempt to recognise commercially driven work during a challenging period for theatrical exhibition.

The 2026 Golden Globes will air live on January 11, with Nikki Glaser returning as host.
