Offering a 100 % rebate on interest, penalty and other fees levied on the principal, the State government on Thursday announced a One Time Settlement (OTS) scheme for those who have defaulted on payment of water bills to the Bangalore Water Supply and Sewerage Board (BWSSB). The total dues amount to ₹701 crore.

According to Law and Parliamentary Affairs Minister H.K. Patil, a three-month window would be provided to the defaulters to clear their dues. Of the total ₹701 crore, about ₹439 crore is principal while ₹262 crore has accumulated as interest, penalty and other fees. The OTS was announced by relaxing the Bangalore Water Supply Regulations, 1965. “The three-month window will come into effect from the date of the order. The OTS is being announced to ensure faster recovery,” he said.

The erstwhile Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) had also given an OTS for property tax dues in 2024-25. The scheme that was also initially opened for three months was extended multiple times. While BBMP did collect a significant chunk of its arrears, many defaulters did not use the scheme as well.

Mr. Patil said that the defaulters include those who have domestic as well as commercial connections. However, the BWSSB also has significant arrears from various government institutes and departments as well. The Cabinet has directed BWSSB to make book adjustments for dues from government departments and bodies.

The Cabinet also approved ₹100 crore for BSWML to implement the Operation and Maintenance of landfill sites works.
