Doctors at the Government Medical College Hospital, Kozhikode, boycotted outpatient (OP) department services and theory classes for medical students on Saturday (November 29, 2025) as part of their ongoing agitation seeking various demands.

T. Rosenara Begum, State president, Kerala Government Medical College Teachers’ Association (KGMCTA), opened a protest meeting outside the Institute of Maternal and Child Health.

The KGMCTA functionaries said that they would continue the agitation and boycott all medical board meetings from December 1. The doctors had earlier staged similar protests on October 20 and 28, and on November 5,13, and 21.

Meanwhile, a section of patients who reached the hospital unaware of the strike were put to hardship. However, the doctors claimed that the number of people who sought treatment was lower. Postgraduate medical students and house surgeons were deployed for duty. Emergency services and inpatient treatment were exempted from the strike.

The KGMCTA functionaries said that many young doctors are leaving the government service because of the unattractive entry-level pay structure. The existing staff are under pressure because new posts are not being created and new staff are not being recruited though the number of patients have been on the rise. Along with this, the doctors are transferred from existing medical colleges to newly set up institutions to meet the criteria of the National Medical Commission, they added.
