The Government Railway Police (GRP) have arrested another suspect in connection with the murder of an electrician near Fort Railway Station. Last week, the GRP had apprehended one of the two men involved in the robbery and murder.
The arrested suspect has been identified as Srinivasan, 51, of Mantharakuppam in Neyveli.
According to GRP sources, around 12.30 a.m. on November 2, the police received information that the body of an unidentified man, believed to be in his 40s, was found lying on the railway track between Fort and Park Stations. Based on a report from the Station Manager of Chennai Beach Station, the GRP, Egmore, registered a case and began an investigation.
The probe led to the identification of the deceased as Asmath Basha, 38, of Pulianthope, who worked as an electrician. The body bore no signs of being hit by a train; however, strangulation marks were found on his neck, along with bleeding from the nose and mouth. As the death appeared suspicious, Inspector General of Police A. G. Babu formed two special teams under the Deputy Superintendent of Police, Egmore, to intensify the investigation.
Last week, the special police team traced and arrested one of the suspects, Suresh, 40, a daily wager from Cemetery Road. During interrogation, he confessed to the crime and revealed the involvement of his associate, Srinivasan, also a daily wager.
A senior police officer said the suspects, Suresh and Srinivasan, were intoxicated with Asmath Basha when a quarrel broke out after they allegedly tried to check his pocket for money. Angered, Asmath Basha reportedly pulled out a screwdriver from his bag and attacked them. In retaliation, the duo strangled him to death using the towel tied around his waist. They then robbed his mobile phone and fled the spot.
