The Kerala High Court on Tuesday closed a public interest litigation (PIL) that sought an increase in the honorarium of Accredited Social Health Activist (ASHA) workers.
A Division Bench of Chief Justice Nitin Jamdar and Justice Syam Kumar V. M .closed the PIL in the wake of the State government submitting before the court that their monthly honorarium has been increased by ₹1,000, from ₹7000 to ₹8000, from November 1. The court said that the workers could take up other grievances, if any, either individually or through their trade unions.
The State government had submitted before the Kerala High Court in August that decisions of the Finance department and the National Health Mission were awaited on a report submitted by a high-level committee on increasing the wages of the workers. The ASHAs have been agitating before the Secretariat in Thiruvananthapuram since early this year, seeking a hike in honorarium and a better pay package.
