The Madurai Bench of the Madras High Court directed Tangedco to pay compensation of ₹10 lakh to the family of an agriculturist from Sivaganga district who was electrocuted in 2023.
The court was hearing the petition filed by Alagammal of Tiruppachethi in Sivaganga district. The petitioner’s husband Perumal, an agriculturist, was electrocuted after he came in contact with a live wire when he was grazing cattle.
Justice G. R. Swaminathan took into account that Tangedco provided payment of ₹5 lakh in case of fatal incidents as ex gratia payment which has been enhanced to ₹10 lakh. The court directed Tangedco to pay the amount in 12 weeks and observed that the petitioner is at liberty to move the jurisdictional civil court for enhanced compensation.
