Expressing concern at plastic waste and other garbage being strewn openly on the premises of the Chottanikkara temple, the Kerala High Court has observed that the measures adopted by the temple authorities are wholly inadequate, and that there is no effective segregation of plastic and other waste.

The waste disposal mechanism was in complete disarray, the court held, referring to photographs that “unequivocally demonstrate that sanitation and cleanliness in and around the temple remained grossly unsatisfactory and far below the standards expected of a temple of such prominence and spiritual significance.”

“In view of the alarming condition brought to our notice, we direct the health inspector of the local authority, or any senior competent officer deputed for the purpose, to conduct an immediate and thorough inspection of the temple premises and place before this court, within ten days, a comprehensive and accurate report, along with digital photographs, detailing the present status of sanitation and cleanliness in and around the temple.”

“In addition, the Devaswom Board must forthwith serve notice on the temple advisory committee. The committee shall appear before the court through counsel and must specifically and transparently explain the steps undertaken by it to ensure that the surroundings of the temple are maintained in a clean, hygienic and orderly manner,” the court said and posted the matter for hearing on December 10.
