The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) on Thursday welcomed the Delhi High Court order permitting electricity connections to disputed or sealed properties.
Senior AAP leader Durgesh Pathak said the proposal for the same was passed by the Municipal Corporation of Delhi when AAP was in power.
“We thank the Delhi High Court for taking cognisance of the proposal passed by the AAP government and directing BSES (Bombay Suburban Electricity Supply) Rajdhani, BSES Yamuna and Tata Power to provide electricity connections to all sealed homes [disputed properties] in Delhi,” he said at a press conference.
“The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) took control of the MCD in 2007 and remained in power until 2022, during which people who migrated from other States and worked in Delhi built homes with their life savings, only to see nearly 1.50 lakh of them sealed by the BJP-ruled MCD,” he said.
Mr. Pathak said in 2021–22, the Delhi Jal Board (DJB) issued a notification directing that all properties in Delhi, including slums, unauthorised colonies, resettlement colonies and disputed properties, must receive water connections.
Mr. Pathak said that several residents approached the court, arguing that water could only be used if electricity was available, and demanded electricity connections.
“After AAP won the MCD election in 2023, the MCD House passed a unanimous resolution on February 26, 2024, directing BSES Rajdhani, BSES Yamuna and Tata Power Limited to provide electricity connections in the same manner that the DJB provides water connections,” he said.
Hitting back, the BJP alleged that if in 2020–21 the AAP government could order the DJB to provide water connections to disputed properties, then why could it not instruct power discoms to provide electricity connections.
“The truth is that there was collusion between AAP leaders and officials of private power companies. Together, they used to supply stolen electricity to disputed properties in Delhi and earn crores from this illegal business,” alleged Delhi BJP spokesperson Praveen Shankar Kapoor.
