Five students of the Government Medical College (GMC), Eluru, were reportedly bitten by rats in the college hostel a couple of days ago. The affected students received treatment and lodged a complaint with the GMC Principal and the Government General Hospital (GGH) Superintendent.

Responding to the incident, Health Minister Y. Satya Kumar ordered an inquiry and directed the officials concerned to launch a sanitation drive to curb the rodent menace.

According to sources, the rats attacked the students, who were later treated at the GGH. Following this, they brought the issue to the notice of the higher authorities.

“The Health Minister directed the Medical Superintendent and other senior officials to submit a detailed report on the incident,” an official told The Hindu on Sunday.

Earlier, there were reports of similar incidents involving rat bites at the Eluru and Guntur Government Hospitals.
