Heavy overnight rain lashed Tiruchi on Sunday, leaving several low-lying and residential areas waterlogged and causing disruptions to vehicle movement during the morning hours.

The sky was overcast throughout the day, and there was incessant heavy rain with minor breaks on Sunday; however, heavy showers began during the evening and lasted until midnight. All parts of the district, including Tiruchi town, airport, junction, Golden Rock, Pullampadi, Kovilpatti, Navalur Kottapattu, and Thuvakudi, received heavy rain.

Sustained rainfall through the night led to water stagnation in several areas, including Khajamalai, KK Nagar, Tiruverumbur, Cantonment, the airport area, Selva Nagar, Vayalur Road, Shanmuga Nagar, Srinivasa Nagar near Mannarpuram, Bharathidasan Salai, Karur Bypass Road, Thillai Nagar, and service roads near the Chennai arm of the Junction overbridge. Roads dug up for underground drainage works also became muddy and slushy, causing inconvenience to residents.

A 24-hour monitoring cell operating at the Corporation office continued to address complaints related to waterlogging caused by the monsoon. Helpline numbers 8300113000 and 0431-3524200 are operational round-the-clock to lodge grievances.

Corporation officials said field teams were deployed early in the morning to clear clogged drains and pump out the rainwater. There were reports of branches falling due to strong winds in some places, and workers were deployed across the city to clear the debris, said an official.
