As the Fisheries Department has imposed a ban on fishermen venturing into the sea in the district as a new low pressure area is set to form in the Bay of Bengal, boats remained on shore in Rameswaram, Pamban and other areas here on Monday.
Officials said the low pressure area that was prevailing over the South Andaman Sea and adjoining areas has now intensified into a deep low pressure area.
The official said, “Due to an upper-air cyclonic circulation, a new low-pressure area is getting formed on November 25 in the Bay of Bengal adjoining the Comorin Sea close to Sri Lanka.”
“The ban is due to strong winds that are expected along the Tamil Nadu coast, blowing at speed of 35 to 45 km/hour. In the Palk Strait, Gulf of Mannar, and Comorin Sea areas, gale-force winds are expected to blow at speeds ranging from 35 km/h to a maximum of 55 km/hour,” he added.
A fisherman who anchored his country boat in Pamban north fishing harbour lost his boat to the strong winds in Pamban.
Vicklin of Thangachimadam near Rameswaram, on Sunday, after his usual fishing trip, anchored the country boat in the sea near the harbour and left for his house.
Due to a sudden squall and rough seas that struck Sunday night, sea water entered the anchored country boat, causing it to sink into the sea.
Though attempts were made to pump the seawater out of the submerged boat using a motor. Since the bottom of the boat was damaged, they were unable to pump the water out.
The boat owner said that due to entry of sea water into the vessel, several thousand rupees worth fishing gear that was inside the boat was swept away into the sea.
