As the Indian Meteorological Department has predicted squally weather in southern Tamil Nadu, the port authorities in Pamban and Thoothukudi have hoisted local cautionary signal number III warning for the fishermen.

Authorities said that a low-pressure area has formed over the Comorin and adjoining areas of Southwest Bay of Bengal and Sri Lanka. The IMD’s forecast, read, “It is very likely to move north-north westwards and become well marked low pressure area during next 24 hours and concentrate into a depression during subsequent 24 hours.”

Under the influence of the low-pressure system ports of south Tamil Nadu would experience squally weather with wind speed reaching 35kmph to 45kmph gusting to 55kmph, it added.

On Wednesday, while the district average rainfall received stood at 15 mm, Pamban received the maximum of 62 mm rainfall, followed by Rameswaram 57 mm, Mandapam 47 mm, Thangachimadam 40.60 mm, Valinokam 17.40mm, Kadaladi 3.60 mm, Pallamorkulam 3.50 mm, Thondi 2.50 mm, Thiruvadanai 2 mm, Ramanathapuram 2 mm, Paramakudi 1.20 mm, and Vattanam 0.80 mm.

The torrential rainfall in the coastal areas and scattered rain observed in the town limits, though, came as a respite to the scorching heat, also disrupted the public’s routine for two days.

In many places like car streets near Sri Ramanathaswamy temple, and in some places inside, nearby Rameswaram municipality office, Rameswaram Government Hospital, Kamarajar Nagar, low lying areas in Pamban chinnapalam, water-logging was observed. But municipality officials said they cleared the water-logging in a few hours.

Fishermen in Pamban and Rameswaram have restrained from entering the sea since Wednesday. Already a country boat had sunk due to the heavy winds.
