1. Karnataka Legislature winter session: Day 1 witnesses tributes, low attendance and protests

The winter session of the Karnataka Legislature in Belagavi began on December 8 with the Assembly paying tributes to six persons who died recently. This included environmentalist Saalumarada Thimmakka, Kannada novelist S.L. Bhyrappa, former Minister H.Y. Meti, film actor M.S. Umesh, and former MLAs R.V. Devaraj and Shivasharanappagouda Patil.

The first day also witnessed lean attendance in the Assembly. There were just 100-110 members in the 224-member House — around 55 members from the Opposition benches, while the ruling benches accounted roughly for another 55 members. The attendance is expected to increase from December 9, when the House will take up full-fledged business.

The day also saw leaders and members of Maharashtra Ekikaran Samiti (MES) trying to hold a ‘Maha Melava’ in protest against the winter session despite not having the requisite permission. MES leaders Manohar Kinekar, Malojirao Ashtekar and Shubham Shelke were among those detained and taken into custody.

2. I am confident of my father completing full term, says Yathindra

Though Chief Minister Siddaramaiah and Deputy Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar had recently announced that they would abide by whatever the decision to be taken by the party high command on the leadership issue and held two rounds of breakfast meetings, MLC and CM’s son Yathindra, has expressed confidence that his father would complete the full term.

Speaking to a private TV channel in Belagavi, Mr. Yathindra said, “Personally, I have confidence that my father will complete the full term as Chief Minister. The Chief Minister is running the government well and there are no mistakes on the part of the government. People are also happy with the Congress government.”

3. New defence MRO facility to come up in Bengaluru, expects first aircraft in early 2027

A new defence Maintenance, Repair and Overhaul (MRO) facility to support the C-130J Super Hercules aircraft will be established in Bengaluru. On December 8, Tata Advanced Systems and Lockheed Martin announced the groundbreaking of the new MRO.

Construction is expected to be completed in 2026 and the facility expects to receive the first C130 for MRO operations in early 2027. The MRO facility will join the existing global network of Lockheed Martin Certified Service Centers and will be strategically located to service the C-130J Super Hercules, KC-130J and C-130 B-H legacy aircraft in the future.
